'The point in the elliptical orbit of a planet, comet, etc., where it is farthest from the sun.' Although this is another case of me liking a word and using it as a name regardless, this picture seems pretty far from any sun, so maybe it fits...

It's been a while since I made any more images for this site, and - being a bit rusty - I thought I'd start off simple again. Thankfully I'm quite the minimalist and actually like how this turned out.

One of those times when you just start messing around with no real aim in mind, just waiting to see where it takes you. In my case, it took me to this picture, and there are worse places to be. Unless the moon lands on you, of course.

Don't ask what this is. I have absolutely no idea what was going through my head when I did it. Having said that, it's not just some random thing - quite a lot of effort went into making the terrain model, I just didn't know what it was going to do when it was finished. I have to say, I like it.

While I was making this one I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd already seen a picture very similar to what I was aiming for. I kept checking through my collection to make sure, and couldn't find any. So, if you've done something like this before me, rest assured I wasn't copying you.

Nice and simple for a change. The waves are actually smoothed out hills with a water texture. The tricky part was getting the weather just right - I wanted it dark and stormy but still bright enough to actually see.

Yet another case of getting the scene like I planned but then completely changing the atmosphere to something that works a whole lot better.

I was aiming for a set of ships that were slightly less typical than my previous efforts (though I'm still proud of the one in Assault), and I think I succeeded, at the cost of having a frankly silly amount of lights in the scene.

I knew my luck couldn't hold out. This image took, by several hours, longer to render than the previous six images put together. Not only that, but I wasn't happy wth the first couple of tries, so I had to wait for it to finish for days. Finally I'm happy with it though.

This took several hours longer to render than I expected. Thankfully it worked out pretty well the first time round. Don't ask what it's meant to be though, or why it's called what it is...

The first of four renders of the same image but at different times of the day. I'd like to say it was a study in something or other but it was really because I couldn't decide on which atmosphere to use.

The skeletons were the easy part. The lighting, as always, was awkward. But the real trick here was the figure in the background. In the end I abandoned his impressive entrance and had him run off like a little girl instead.

This is one of my more recent pictures, and it made me appreciate quite how much work it takes to produce computer models for sci-fi programmes and movies. It uses the same image for the planet as Ambition, but with an added cloud layer. Originally the sun was located just behind the planet for a really nice sunrise through the clouds, but then you couldn't see any detail in the foreground. Heigh ho, the sacrifices we all must make...
